Energy Efficiency (EE) certificates are similar to RECs in that they are both tradable items. EE certificates are created from decommissioning something that uses a lot of electricity. For example an electric hot water system could be decommissioned and replaced with an instantaneous gas hot water system, this activity would attracted an assigned number of tradable EE certificates. EE certificates are designed to support households, commercial and industrial industries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Each VEEC represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) abated by a prescribed activity.
