Energy Efficient Development Rebate

The Hobart City Council offers a 100% rebate on Council's basic planning fee, the building and plumbing administration fees - where sound and permanent energy efficient principles and features are incorporated into the planning and design of new houses and additions to existing houses.

It is important to recognise that the qualifying criteria are not always possible to achieve for various reasons:-

• the location, orientation and size of the block to be built on may not allow buildings to be ideally orientated or sited.
• neighbouring properties may have structures that will overshadow where owners want to build.

other issues include bush fire protection, landscape protection, bushland and habitat conservation, cultural heritage etc. 

 Qualifying for the Rebate

You must achieve a score of 6 points.  Rebates are paid following final building inspections where a  certificate of completion will be issued. Once this is achieved complete the application form and forward it to:

Energy Efficient Development Rebate Scheme, Development Planning Unit, Hobart City Council, GPO Box 503, Hobart, 7001.

Location:  2 points

The building has been located to avoid overshadowing by neighbouring buildings, structures or vegetation and of neighbouring buildings. Please note that shadow diagrams are required to demonstrate compliance.

Orientation:  2 points

The building faces north between 15 degrees to north-west and 30 degrees to north-east.

Living Areas:  2 points

Location 60% of all Living Areas are located on the northern side of the building. Living Areas include, lounge, kitchen, dining, family and study.

Solar Hot Water Systems:  6 points

Certified solar hot water systems have been installed

Development is 5 Star National House Energy Rated, certified by a qualified person.
